The article "Mommy, the Drone's Here!" by Maureen Dowd reflects upon the differentiating opinions surrounding the topic of package-carrying drones - tiny flying robots that will deliver your items (bought from Amazon) directly to your home in 30 minutes. Revealed just this week, drones provide a new, exciting way to deliver parcels, as well as enable faster delivery (so you won't have to sit around waiting for your package for two weeks), create new jobs, and are completely safe.
First of all, the drones allow items to be delivered faster. Most people are looking at this as a bad thing, believing it to be feeding into America's need for instant gratification, but I believe that this is wonderful. People will no longer have to wait for long periods of time for their packages! Now, we can get what we need the moment we need it.
Second of all, many new jobs will be created. For example, there will be workers needed to build the drones in factories in assembly lines, as well as to program the drones to receive their coordinates in the installed GPS systems. Another example is that there will be people in charge of managing the business of the drones, with whole corporations devoted to them. This will allow for more opportunities of employment.
Finally, the construction of the drones and their method of travel are safe to the public. For example, if you're worried about plane interference, the drones are flying much lower to the ground than planes, which are thousands of feet in the air. The drones are merely going at most a few hundred feet. Also, they will only stop at the specific location that's been programmed into their system, so they won't accidentally fall on someone's head. They'll also most likely have sensors to detect if someone is beneath them.
While not completely ready yet, I believe that these drones will make a fine addition to Amazon's business in 2015. All in all, they will allow for speedy delivery, they will create new jobs, and they will be able to deliver packages safely and easily. I simply cannot wait.
